1882-1967. US painter and etcher. His views
of New York in the 1930s and 1940s captured
the loneliness and superficial glamour of
city life, as in Nighthawks 1942 (Art
Institute, Chicago). Hopper's teacher Robert
Henri (1865-1929), associated with the Ashcan
school, was a formative influence. He was a
realist who never followed avantgarde trends.
